1 - 3 September 2023: SYSTEMA Marseille
Lateral Roma is thrilled to announce its participation in this year's Systema, unfolding within the historic Palais Carli Music Conservatory in Marseille on September 1-2-3.
During this occasion, Lateral Roma collaborated with In’N’Out Fragrances to create an après soleil named Late di Lateral. For the opening evening, Tobias Koch is set to present a site-specific performance in the conservatory's courtyard. Normally inaccessible to the public, the building's interior exhibits works from project spaces across Europe. As part of this exhibition, Lateral Roma will show Lila De Magalhaes' 2012 film, 'It's the Natural Vogue', and an ongoing series of miniatures titled 'Shrinky Dink Cosmologies' by Beatrice Tabacchi.
Guided by our penchant for adopting a playful and symbolically resistant approach to conventional artistic interaction, research, and presentation, Lateral Roma has woven a characteristic thread through our participation at this year's Systema. This thread is one of whimsy and perhaps even childlike delight, framing our involvement as an assortment of quaint and fanciful demeanors–with a tilt of throwing caution to the wind.
If you are in Marseille this weekend, check out systema.plus or @systema.plus for more information about the program and opening times.

In'n'out Fragrances X Lateral Roma
Like fledgling birds in a nest, just realizing how to spread their wings, unlike the seasoned birds soar high above in the vast sky, highlighting the lush tapestry of the grove below. The ticklish and youthful character of an unripe green banana serves as the inspiration for the Late di Lateral (Après Soleil) fragrance.
Imagine the sensation of being still 'green behind the ears,' and with unwavering trust, gently apply the après soleil to bestow a natural, fresh cosmetic layer onto your skin. The omnipresent restroom dispensers, placed throughout corridors of Marseille’s historic conservatory building, offer an opportunity for visitors to connect with a childish atmosphere through their sense of smell. Simply press to use, dispensing the fanciful freshness of an unripe green banana aroma that doesn't typically make its way into your consumption choices.
The composition is made from synthetic materials often found in the culinary realm. Further enriched by the powdery and grassy nuance of Mimosa Absolut, sourced from the vegetation of the Var region, not far from Marseille. The composition’s base is a harmonious blend of lactonic-milky-nutty-sandalwood, intermingled with the almost fresh essence of unripe green bananas, characterized by a subtle tangy undertone.
It’s the Natural Vogue (2012) by Lila de Magalhaes
Uninterrupted, a child's voice narrates image descriptions from Vogue magazine while an opera record plays in the background. This narration, coupled with the sound of fingers flipping through magazine pages, monopolizes the interaction between the depicted young child and the artist, Lila De Magalhaes.
The film captures a young Ivy McGoldrick within an opulent yet intimately arranged setting, where she enthusiastically engages in a playful dressing session for the camera. McGoldrick's gaze becomes fixated on the mirror, enacting a star-studded fantasy. Magalhaes freezes and reverses the imaginary photoshoot's image, gradually transitioning from light to darkness. McGoldrick utters, "kinda like Brigit Bardot's teeth."
Lila De Magalhaes's 2012 film, 'It's the Natural Vogue,' can be discovered nestled in the dimly lit attic of Palais Carli. In this setting, everything becomes hazy and veiled, akin to a dream.

Shrinky Dink Cosmologies (2023) by Beatrice Tabacchi
Beatrice Tabacchi introduced a series of miniatures through the use of shrinking delicate and pliable sheets within the context of her practice during her solo show at Lateral Roma. While undergoing a heat-induced transformation, the polystyrene sheets morph into a solid form while shrinking in size. Aptly named 'Shrinky Dinks,' this craft was originated in 1973 by Betty Morris of Brookfield, Wisconsin. It involves the creation of miniature toys reaching its zenith of notoriety during the 1980s, ‘Skrinky Dinks’ has become a nostalgic craft for many.
Tabacchi’s miniatures are like palimpsests, resembling illuminated manuscripts that capture intimate memories and landscapes from the artist's life between Chicago and Rome. As a form of storytelling within a compact space, the shrunken ‘Skrinky Dinks’ preserve visible traces of their original forms and represent her ongoing exploration of intricate illustrations and recurring characters. Among the works that constitute Tabacchi’s ‘Shrinky Dink Cosmologies’, only a fraction of the series is shown on a glass window in a room above the main entrance hall of the Palais.
Tobias Koch, performance
Tobias Koch’s site-specific performances articulate the varying unseen auditory connections between space and sound. Koch’s digitally rendered compositions become amplified by the surrounding acoustic frequencies or architectural matter which develops in a series of live instrumentations by the artist. The audience's perception shifts between listening and understanding the tangible spatial dimensions of the space throughout the performance’s duration. Leveraging improvisational techniques, he brings a musical focus to the physical environment in which the performance takes place. His approach results in a score that is distinctly anchored in a heightened visceral experience, shared by both Koch and the audience.
