The first exhibition in the new space of Lateral Roma, located in the Roman neighbourhood of Appio-Latino, brings together four sound works by artists Tobias Koch, Rada Kozelj, Double Goocher Shop and Semuel Lala. Each artist’s work can be heard for three days, inviting visitors to concentrated listening sessions.
The Kaplan Text is based on a book Double Goocher Shop (Renato Grieco & MP Hopkins) produced for the project Acherotipismo by AL MARE (Teatrum Botanicum 2018, PAV, Torino) and inspired by the character George Kaplan from Alfred Hitchcock’s film North By Northwest. Sections of the novel were repeatedly translated to produce a number of scripts, scripts that Double Goocher Shop then used to create this text-sound piece. The work takes on the form of a kind of broken recital in which characters are analysed and defamed, a fantasy blurred into a ruffled realm of magnetic tape, scattered speech, phonopoetic sweeps, and concrète sound.
Double Goocher Shop is the project of Italian artist Renato Grieco and Australian artist MP Hopkins. They make recordings, texts, and installations.
Renato Grieco (b 1991, Naples, Italy) is a composer, performer, independent researcher and curator. He lives and works in Naples.
MP Hopkins makes performative, installation and textual works. He lives and works in Sydney.
