We all agree when we say that writing is essentially a corporal reaction: a rash, a cough, a moan. When who is writing is the instrument of a landscape—as if we’d be one and the same with all that surrounds us—then writing might function as rain or fog: an evaporation, or in certain cases, a tidal wave or a tectonic shift. If we place more bodies on that landscape then writing would become a tale: large, fat, soft and bulky. The more we are, the more the skin becomes a filter between us and our background. Out loud words are stranded over time, if they be hooks lured into water. Some are so heavy that we end up tattooing them onto our bodies, reminders of a certain kind of bitterness we had recently tasted. Then again, if that very same landscape remains without bodies, we’d use those words to bridge distances, as if they could expand and swell and fill that gap.
One at a time we open a page of a book to read each other our future.
Racconto Grosso* is the title of a collection of short stories, written by Paola Masino between 1935 and 1938, during the fascist regime in Italy. We have used it as bait to attract corpulent words and talking bodies, to meet in lucid dreams and embodied thoughts devoid of meaning.
