16 October–14 November 2021, Elisa Barrera – Paradisiaka
Paradisiaka is the first solo exhibition presented in Rome by artist Elisa Barrera, developed in an extended conversation with curator Marta Federici. The project stems from a prolonged research conducted by the artist around a series of open air discos which were built along the Italian coastline in the late 1980s and the 1990s, most of which are now abandoned. Conceived as mythical gardens or Edens, these architectures were decorated with arches, fountains, benches and pergolas, which intertwined with the lush vegetation, creating utopian views.
Barrera questions the aesthetic, architectural and cultural values sedimented in these places and, more broadly, in the Mediterranean landscape encompassing them, and triggers a reflection that moves between club culture and ancient Roman frescoes, real and virtual spaces, personal and collective imaginaries. Conceived as a site–specific intervention inside Lateral Roma’s space, Paradisiaka uses drawing and painting in order to open up a thorough dialogue with the architecture of the place, while subtly playing with the structure of the exhibition device.
Elisa Barrera (Turin, 1989) lives and works in Hamburg. Her works have been exhibited by different galleries and institutions, including: Peach (Rotterdam, 2021), Neuer Essener Kunstverein (2020), Acud Macht Neu (Berlin, 2020), Muhry (Hamburg, 2020), Kunsthaus Hamburg (Hamburg,2021), Kunstverein Harburger Bahnhof (Berlin, 2019), Galerie Karin Günther (Hamburg, 2019), Almanac Inn (Turin, 2018), Halle für Kunst Lüneburg (Lüneburg, 2017), Kunstverein Schwerin (Schwerin, 2017), DELF (Vienna, 2017). In 2014 she founded the artist run space Come Over Chez Malik's in Hamburg; the space aims to promote young women artists and to contribute to the development of a local art scene.
