7 & 8 May 2021, Lucia Martinez Garcia – Three Films
Friday 7 May, 8 pm
Saturday 8 May, 8 pm
A two-day film program with three films by Lucia Martinez Garcia.
EAU VIVE (2019), MIRADOR (2016) and another, new film are three portraits of young adults. In intimate closeness we accompany them through a hot summer, through difficult group dynamics and violent sexual encounters, through jealousy, boredom, desire.
During a make-up session, the protagonist of Martinez' new film (2021), in whispers, reveals the judgement and horrors she has encountered in dating apps and reads us text messages that are affectionate one moment, aggressive the next, feelings together sexual. Shape-shifting, she appears as a sea nixie, a creature from another world or part of a fashion shoot. In EAU VIVE (2019), a melancholy feeling of standing still accompanies the stuffy summer air, and Lou finds herself facing conflicting emotions of wanting to belong to her group of friends and wanting to break away from them. Between parties and dips in the river, Lou navigates through that impossible dependency of feeling insecure and wanting to impress. And in MIRADOR (2016), Lucas, out of a shelter, texts friends, hangs out with them in an empty roof-top swimming pool, and finds himself as the new and still undecided-upon member of a close-knit circle of acquaintances – “I’m looking at Lucas. I’m looking at you”, says one of them, refusing to take his sunglasses off.
Lucia Martinez Garcia (*1994, Geneva CH) is a director whose films explore the changes linked to growing up, especially the emotional shifts we experience when moving from child- into adulthood. In her films, she works with people she is close with – a sibling, a neighbour, friends – and interweaves their realities with fiction. In close-ups, using soft lighting and a distinct way of combining sound, music and voice, these portrayals are careful, sensitive personal/political stories.
