16 December, 2021–23 January, 2022: Liryc Dela Cruz, Via Canosa di Puglia 32, 00177 Roma
Via Canosa di Puglia 32, 00177 Roma is the title of the project presented at Lateral Roma by artist and film director Liryc Dela Cruz. Revolving around eroticism and the dynamics of care that accompany the intimate encounter between lovers, the installation collects and re-arranges fragments of the artist’s bedroom inside the exhibition venue. Dela Cruz short-circuits the distinction between private and public space and invites the audience to explore the idea of the bed as a place of comfort: a fortress where one can take refuge and surrender; a sanctuary for the body; a secret territory where tenderness, grief, affection, pain and devotion meet and endlessly metamorphose into each other.
Liryc Dela Cruz is a film director and artist from Tupi, South Cotabato in Mindanao, Philippines. He is currently based in Rome, Italy. His works have been selected and screened at international film festivals and art events, and are thematically linked to his origins, history and personal psychology. He collaborated with Filipino independent filmmaker Lav Diaz and was a student of Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Dela Cruz has been associated with the slow cinema movement (Ji.hlava IDFF '18). In 2020, he was selected as one of the emerging young directors at the Berlinale Talents, during the 70th Berlin International Film Festival. Recently, Dela Cruz has been selected by Teatro di Roma to participate in the INFRA project 2020-2021and in 2020 received Torino Social Impact Art Award curated by Artissima for Il Mio Filippino, an ongoing work that focuses on the invisibility of Filipino domestic workers in Italy and other territories.
